Much to my dismay, the distance between fashion and I continues to expand every day. And this estrangement happened in stages, just like the lockdown that caused it. From the pre-lockdown era of devoting an hour picking my outfit, and doing a full face of natural-makeup look every morning, I was down to brushing my hair, slapping on some lip balm and wearing a respectable shirt with my tattered shorts for office calls, by the second week of quarantine. And now that we're inches away from crossing the 2-month mark in our new lockdown lives, I've never felt more separated from the notion of dressing up, ever.
So, a few nights ago, I found myself standing in front of my full-length mirror, and scowling at my outfit choice of pyjamas dating back to undergrad years, and a black t-shirt splotched with the remnants of last nights dinner. And while I was busy internally screaming at the sorry state of my style affairs, I had what I'd like to call an epiphany. Yes, I don't need to step out and ergo, I don't need to dress up. But this cause-effect relationship was established by none other, than me, myself and I. 'Cause as far as I can recall, I was the flag bearer of dressing up for only myself before this lockdown started. Then, why oh why, did I stop simply because there was nobody else around?
Don't worry, I wasn't using this story to set the stage for a suggestion to pull out your favourite LBD, or strut your 6-inch heels across the living room. You can continue wearing your pyjamas. In fact, I insist you do. Because what will follow now, is a round-up of 5 ways to dress up your PJs at home! Why? For the sole reason that we and our self-esteem, could use some glam every now and then. Especially when we're in the middle of what feels like a bad episode of a dystopian TV show.
1. Layer Your PJ Slip Over A White T-Shirt
Layering strappy dresses and maxi gowns over basic t-shirts have been one of the most trending styles this season. For an at-home version, you can swap the fancy strappy dresses for your night slip, and don it over a solid white t-shirt. You can take this PJ outfit idea a couple of notches higher on the trend quotient by sporting a choker on your neck, and pulling up your hair in a loose, messy ponytail.
