Fortunately, we got a dermatologist to answer. With over 8 years of experience working with renowned healthcare centres, she is currently practising in New Delhi.

The news is, these rollers are not new. In fact, they have been used as a beauty tool in China for ages. However, these days, facial rollers have become the talk of the town. It’s pandemic time and DIY tricks are becoming super popular among the work-from-home brigade. Since people are scared to step out and visit the salon often, what better than a small quick fix to replenish and rejuvenate the skin at home?
Also, who has the time for long facial massages, right?
The good news is Yes, they do! Just like any other facial, these rollers increase the blood flow, drain the accumulated lymphatic fluid and help relax the tense facial muscles. This not only energizes and rejuvenates the facial skin, it also reduces swelling and puffiness. Frequent use of rollers can help build up collagen and minimize fine lines and wrinkles.
There is only one correct way to roll – always upwards and outwards on the face; up and down on the neck. You may use it 3 to 4 times a week for as long as you like. Just remember, not to press too hard.
Rollers are dual for a purpose; the smaller end is to be used around the eyes and mouth while the larger one is rolled on the forehead, cheeks, jawline and neck.
Believe me when I say that your face roller is not a magic wand! The changes are refreshing but subtle. So, take a chill pill and relax. You heard that right, it is a relaxation tool.
You must remember that the roller is never used directly on dry skin. In fact, the facial oil or serum that you use for rolling is equally important or even more important. So, choose your ingredients appropriately.

Use the roller only on a clean face. Always clean and dry the roller after every use, else it can accumulate dirt and bacteria, causing more harm than good for your skin.
Make sure you buy a roller with a very smooth surface. If rough or grooved, it can abrade the skin and leave pesky marks.

Strictly, do not use a face roller if you are suffering from acne, herpes or any kind of eruptions on your face.
While I did say facial rollers work well on dark circles and help detox a puffy face but they only work as well as ice cubes or cold cucumber and potato slices.
It is just a more sophisticated tool to handle the same age-old woes, so set your expectations right. It is not a replacement for your monthly facial massage or a treatment at the dermatologist.
One must store it in the refrigerator for the best possible results. A cold stone works well irrespective of whether it is pretty rose quartz or a cool green jade. I hope you will not fall prey to an astrological or marketing gimmick for which stone to pick!
Though not a must-have miracle tool, a facial roller can be a great addition to your daily skincare routine. Just remember the basic science behind it, be practical and get rolling!
