From the Pirates of the Caribbean to engineering students in India, you’ll find folks dedicated to Rum everywhere in the world!
But there’s one particular rum which truly stands out: The old monk. Old monk loyalists don’t give a damn about the finest whiskies and wines of the world, because the Monk is their one and only true love.
Here are some lesser known facts about your favourite rum that you probably didn’t know.
1. Old Monk is THE engineer’s drink
Engineers are probably the biggest fans of Old Monk. It’s the solution to almost all of their problems, be it their (non-existent) love life or their dreaded exams. It gets them high and doesn’t even hurt their wallet. What more could you ask for?
“There’s so much of love in the air, but I just catch cold! Either way, Old Monk’s there for my rescue!”
2. Gets you high & healthy all at the same time!
Monk lovers claim the rum can cure anything, from common cold to scurvy, diabetes and even heart problems! It was used by sailors (and erm, pirates) to keep scurvy at bay in ancient times.
Some fans also like to say that Monk never gives them those dreaded hangovers! Could it be any better?!
3. There’s an entire family of the Old Monk
Two new variants have joined the clan. The “Old Monk Gold Reserve” and the “Old Monk Supreme” have become two more reasons for the fans to be happy about. The variations come in bottles of different shapes and sizes, some of which are huge, almost as though they’re trying to tell you what you might look like if you don’t stop drinking it!
Just kidding! Pick a drink and enjoy some bonding time with your folks and the Monk Family!
4. Old Monk – Kills the germs inside as well as outside!
This Rum can also be used as an antiseptic. Drink a little, enjoy some more, and if you trip and fall while you’re high, just apply the drink to your bruised ass and you’re good to go!
5. There’s an Old Monk beer!
If you’re not a big fan of rums or specifically old monk’s rum (gasp!), you’ll be happy to know that the monk is not just limited to rums. There’s a beer called the ‘Old Monk 10000 Super Beer’ , and it’s known to be pretty strong in taste. But there’s a downside, it’s only available in Goa (Yet another reason to make the Goa plan work!).
6. It doesn’t need advertisements
The brand is so famous that it does not even advertise and is still almost always at the top. It’s the third largest selling rum in the world!
7. Old Monk is an Indian brand
The Old Monk is an Indian brand and is loved by people all around the world. In India, the hype is such that we’ve heard some people even campaigned for the Monk to be made the national drink of India!
8. It’s the secret ingredient in so many dishes
Did you know you could use the Monk as that special, secret ingredient in many mouthwatering dishes? From desserts like Rum Cake, Rum Caramels, Rum Pineapple Bowl, Chocolate Rum Balls, etc. to Chicken Kebabs with Spicy Rum Marinade and Rum-Cola Chicken Wings, it can be used for so many things!
And then of course, there are the Monk cocktails. I’ll just say that neat Old Monk is for the brave, Monk with water is daring, but Old Monk with Coke is simply happiness!
